History of the National Gallery: 200 years

2025 marked the culmination of the bicentenary of the founding of the National Gallery. This tells the story of the original collection bought in 1824, by Lord Liverpool’s government for £57,000. They were initially displayed at 100 Pall Mall, but in 1838 it was decided that a whole new building was required, our National Gallery in Trafalgar Square. We look at the highs and lows of this iconic building, suffragette sabotage, thefts and bombs.
