“Portraits of London: Ten Leading Artists Interpret the City Through Two Centuries”
By Charlie Forman
Dazzling London had motivated many great artists. Picking five periods between 1750 and 1920, and five pairs of artists, this lecture compares and constructs their take on the city. Hogarth and Canaletto’s London were unrecognisably different, Constable had a dim view, Turner turned it into a blaze of light. Frith and Maddox Brown explored Victorian class relations. These artists were followed by Whistler and the ensuing Impressionists, then Pissarro and his gaunt suburbs. A fascinating insight.
