Roman and Islamic Art of Libya , Tunisia and Morocco
Fabulous mosaics, imposing carved monuments and impressive private villas attest to the great wealth of these countries during the first century AD.The Romans were replaced by the Byzantines, and then Islam swept in from Arabia, bringing new architecture and decorations that have remained ever since. Mosques, mausoleums and private houses re-used Roman columns, and these were lavishly enhanced with “Zihij” tilework and delicate arabesque decorations.
