SUMMARY:Guided Tour of St Mary's Churchyard by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
DESCRIPTION:a representative from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission will be conducting tours of St Mary’s Churchyard on Saturday 5th August 2023. In fact\, the representative will be Fiona Young\, friend of our society and author of the ANZAC “Letters Home” book.\nThe date is Saturday 5th August and there will be one tour in the morning 11.00-12.30 and one in the afternoon 14.00-15.30.\nTickets are free and can be booked through the link below.\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cwgc-tours-2023-harefield-st-marys-churchyard-tickets-675837988617\nYou may only associate the Commonwealth War Graves Commission with the many graveyards dotted across the famous battlefields in France and Belgium. However\, they are in fact responsible for all the war graves wherever they are. Many of these graves are in the churchyards in the towns and villages across the length and breadth of the country. And that\, of course\, includes our own churchyard at St Mary’s.\nBy the way\, a war grave is defined simply as follows:- “Men and women of the Commonwealth military or auxiliary forces who lost their lives during the official dates of the World War One (4 August 1914 to 31 August 1921) and World War Two (3 September 1939 to 31 December 1947) are war casualties. Those who died after discharge may qualify if their death was a direct result of their war service.”\nYou can find out more about the Commissions work from their website at the following link.\nCWGC website:- https://www.cwgc.org/our-war-graves-your-history/whats-happening-near-you/
